Who Does Taxi Insurance Cover?

Taxi insurance can offer you the following important protections:

  •  Public liability – if you are responsible for causing injury or damaging the property of a member of the public and they sue you, you’ll be glad you have public liability insurance in place.  It will help with the costs of mounting a defence and paying any compensation
  • Motor legal – accidents happen, and you can protect yourself with up to £100,000 of motor legal cover.  Typically this includes recovery of uninsured losses, personal injury, and a guaranteed replacement vehicle regardless of fault
  • Excess protection – if you’re required to pay an excess and an uninsured driver hits you, or you’re at fault for an accident, you’ll be covered for the excess costs
  • Protected no-claims bonus – so that in the event of a claim, you won’t lose your no-claims bonus
  • Breakdown and recovery cover – your cab is your business, and if it’s off the road, you can’t work.  Adding breakdown insurance to your policy can help you get back on the road sooner in the event of a problem

What Types Of Taxi Insurance Are There?

Taxi insurance comes in various forms, each offering a different level of protection.  The most common are:

  • Third-party only – the minimum required by law and will only protect you from third-party liabilities – e.g., damage to another driver’s car in the event of an accident if it’s your fault
  • Third-party, fire, and theft – similar to the above, but it also insures your vehicle should it be stolen, damaged, or destroyed in a fire
  • Fully comprehensive – fully comprehensive will protect you should your vehicle be lost to fire, or stolen, and, in the event of an accident, it will pay for repairs to your vehicle as well as the other vehicle, even if the accident was your fault

On top of these, there are two other forms of cover:

  • Private hire – covers you if you drive a taxi that must be pre-booked

  • Public hire – covers you if your taxi is available to pre-book or can be stopped on the street

Irrespective of which type of cover you choose, you’ll need a taxi license before getting a taxi insurance quote.  If you’re unsure which type of policy is right for you, please call us on (01733) 777799, and we’ll be happy to help.

How To Save On Taxi Insurance

We’ve spent years helping drivers save on their taxi insurance premiums.  To help you do the same, here are some top tips for saving on taxi insurance quotes;

  • Tip 1: Shop around – it’s a competitive market, and you’ll need to look around to see if you want the best deal.  Better still, get an independent insurance broker like us to do the shopping around for you
  • Tip 2: Use an insurance broker – using an independent broker such as Trisure Insurance Services can not only save you time by doing the shopping around for you, but with  our network of contacts with leading insurers, we may be able to save you money without compromising on the quality of the cover
  • Tip 3: Increase your excess – raising your excess – the amount you pay in case of a claim – can reduce your premium.  This is because, in the event of a claim, the insurer will have less to pay out, and a higher excess is likely to reduce your claims for more minor incidents
  • Tip 4: Protect your vehicle – dashcams, in-car systems such as telematics, and having your car parked securely overnight can all help keep premiums down
  • Tip 5: Build up your no-claims discount – only claim when you have to or get a protected no-claims element to your policy
  • Tip 6: two or more vehicles?  Look into fleet insurancefleet insurance is an excellent option if you have two or more vehicles – cars, motorbikes, or vans.  It can reduce the cost of cab cover, gives you one renewal date, and gives you the flexibility to add and remove vehicles and drivers as you need to

How Are Taxi Insurance Premiums Calculated?

There are several factors insurers consider when calculating your taxi insurance premium, including:

  • Your age – the younger you are, the more it will cost, as the risks of a claim are deemed to be higher.  Many insurers won’t consider drivers under the age of 25, and elderly drivers may find themselves paying more

  • No claims bonus – how many years you have gone without making a claim will help insurers decide on your quotes

  • Your vehicle – the type, age, make, size of the engine, and condition of your vehicle are all factors

  • Your driving history – how long youve been driving, whether or not youve had any claims, convictions, or points on your licence will be considered

  • Your postcode – where you drive makes a huge difference to your policy costs.  Postcodes with unfavourable crime rates will push up premiums

  • The hours you work – night work and early mornings are likely to increase your premiums
